First Match, written and directed by Olivia Newman, recipient of the 2015 Durga Entertainment Filmmaker Grant, is now streaming on Netflix.
Inspired by real stories, the film follows a teenage girl from Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood who joins her school’s all-boys wrestling team in a desperate attempt to reconnect with her estranged father.
Premiering at the SXSW Film Festival in 2018, First Match won the Audience Award – Narrative Feature Competition, and was later acquired and distributed globally by Netflix.
